A Ritual for the Living Earth

Rootsongs is a simple way to deepen our relationship with the more-than-human world in increasingly turbulent times. It is indebted to the Church of the Wild movement conceived by Victoria Loorz and adapted for our bioregion as Sanctuary of the Wild by Mary Gleason, Mirabai Marquardt, and Chante Ishta, via the Rochester Area Pachamama Alliance. â€‹

Rootsongs meets monthly at Highland Park. Here's what we do:

  1. Gather in a circle outside

  2. Sing together

  3. Spend ~20 minutes alone & silent, in the park (supervised activity for small children)

  4. Return and share with others

  5. Sing together again

Rootsongs is not adapted from any particular faith or indigenous tradition. Anyone can participate. Singing and sharing are both optional.

Rootsongs is led by three facilitators with Jewish, Buddhist, Earth-based, and Christian backgrounds, practices, & ancestries. An optional Havdalah ceremony may be held after Rootsongs for those marking the end of Shabbat.
